Post-Op Instructions For Implants
Postoperative, following a surgery, care is most important to hasten healing and recovery. Expect some swelling, stiffness and discomfort. Feel free to call our office with any questions or concerns. Pain
- Pain and soreness are normal and expected for 3-5 days after surgery.
- Pain may often increase for first 3-5 days and then begin to decrease.
- With severe pain, take medications every 4-6 hours, including through the night, with food for 24-48 hours, regardless of pain levels.
- All medications should be taken with food to avoid nausea.
Medications
- Take antibiotics for one week following surgery. Always take full dose of pills prescribed.
- Continue to take anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. Ibuprofen) for 48 hours after surgery.
Bleeding
- Bleeding may persist for up to 24 hours. Bleeding should be minor. Contact us if you have any concerns.
Diet
- A normal diet may be maintained but certain foods should be avoided for the first 3 days: sharp edged foods (chips, etc.), shells from nuts, hard foods. We recommend to use caution when eating to protect the surgical site.
Rinse
- Begin Chlorhexadine rinse one (1) day after surgery. Rinse one capful for 1 minute after brushing teeth. Continue rinse until bottle is empty.
Swelling
- Swelling is normal and expected 3-5 days after surgery.
- Use ice packs to prevent and decrease swelling (especially for the first 24 hours). Avoid hot packs.
Smoking
- Smoking will disrupt normal healing. Do not smoke for at least 24-48 hours after surgery.
